2003. aasta augustis sai Lynch meditsiinilise tunnustuse.

Paraadi korraldas linna kaubanduskoda, et toetada Ameerika võimalikku sisenemist I maailmasõda.

Billings sai ametliku armu alles 1961. aastal.

Wiley Post lendab üksinda üle maailma

Ameerika lendur Wiley Post naaseb New Yorgis Floyd Bennett Fieldile, olles lennanud soolo ümber maailma 7 päeva, 18 tundi ja 49 minutit.

John Dillinger sündis Indiana osariigis Indianapolis 1903. aastal.

Kahe Pierpont'i naissõbra abiga seadis Dillinger jailbreaki üles. Relvad osteti ja korraldati salakaubana Michigani linna vanglasse. Vanglatöötajad said altkäemaksu ja seati sisse turvaline maja. 22. septembril arreteeriti Dillinger aga vaid mõned päevad enne jailbreak'i toimumist Ohio osariigis Daytonis.

22. aprillil tungis FBI kuurorti. Katastroofilises operatsioonis tulistas FBI ekslikult kolme tsiviilisikut, kellest üks suri Baby Face Nelson tappis ühe agendi, tulistas teise ja haavas kriitiliselt politseinikku, kellest kogu Dillingeri kamp pääses.

Sage'i oranž kleit tundus Biograafi tulede all punane, mis tooks talle hüüdnime "daam punases".

Samal ajal teenis Qusay Saddami usalduse.

Asutatakse Fisher Body Company

Kõik GM -i kehad aastatel 1919–1944 läbisid Fisheri mehe loa.

Kell 14 oli kogu linn vee all.

Kui Quincy, Illinoisi osariik purunes, ei olnud võimalik Mississippi jõge ületada 250 miili kaugusel St. Graftonis, Illinoisis, ulatusid üleujutusveed kahe korruse kõrgusele. Teistel linnadel oli parem õnn- Missouri osariigis St. Pingutustele abistati isegi vange. Jõgi harjas rekordilise 49 jala kõrgusel, vaid kaks jalga allpool paremat jõevee taset.

Üleujutus uputas miljon aakrit esmaklassilist põllumaad ja tegi laastamistöö piirkonna majandusele. Miilid nisupõlde olid sel hooajal saagi koristamiseks liiga küllastunud. Lisaks uhusid taludest pärit herbitsiidid jõe alla ja kahjustasid tugevalt Louisiana kalakasvandusi. Paljud teised inimesed kaotasid töö, kui praamiliiklus jõel kaheks kuuks peatati.

Jessica Lynch saab 1 miljoni dollari suuruse raamatupakkumise

Raamat peaks ilmuma novembri keskel, esimene trükk on umbes 500 000 eksemplari.

See on lugu Ameerikas kasvamisest."

Populaarsed uudised

Ootan neid esimesi samme."

Bragg on kirjutanud mitmeid raamatuid, sealhulgas mälestusteraamatu "All Over but the Shoutin '", ja võitis 1996. aastal, kaks aastat pärast The New York Timesis tööle asumist, Pulitzeri mängufilmide eest.

Ferdinand and Isabella united the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, except
Portugal, and formed a united Spain. The unification was completed in 1492
with the fall of Granada.

Spain is the name formerly given to the Iberian peninsula, and as such any
one born there was a Spaniard. In addition, after the Catholic Kings
united the various Spanish kingdoms into the pluralistic state that exists
today, and for over five hundred years, people of any of those old kingdoms,
now regions, are proper Spaniards.

To say that Castilians are the true Spaniards is as ignorant as saying the
New Englanders are the true Americans.

Ferdinand the Second, King of Aragon, King of Leon and Castilla, King of
Sicily and King of Naples was Catalan by his upbringing.

I am sure that those fine Castilians Mr. Hines knows, if they existed,
would laugh behind his back at the sub-standard education of this Useful
Idiot who is lacking as much in history as he is in "hidalguia."

We need to wait for the full story to come out on all this.

These fragmentary reports are not very helpful.

Keep in mind The Fog of War.

Also keep in mind that our soldiers don't just walk in because someone says
"She's not guarded. All the troops have left. You can come and get her any
time you want."

There will probably be one really good book on it someday.

It never got that far. The doctors couldn't get near the US troops
without being shot at.

"My son has asked for a pair of Nike trainers.
He's ten years old, he should make his own"

"I bought a CD of whale music. Imagine my
disappointment when I got home to discover

You haven't understood what the doctor said. It wasn't that the
soldiers refused to believe them but that the soldiers shot at them as
they approached.

You don't approach armed soldiers who may have said "Halt!"

If they did approach, the soldiers had every right to shoot.

Wait for the full reports to come out.

You are like a gossipmonger leaping to conclusions every time you read a new
headline in the National Enquirer at the supermarket checkout stand.

Another unwarranted personal attack. Mr. Hines had no idea where Julian
got his information from. It HAS to be the National Enquirer because he
doesn't like the information one bit.

Mr. Hines has no place in a serious debate. In a properly arbitrated debate
he would get disqualified right at the outset because he has no idea of how
to construct a rational argument that is sound, valid, and just. He has
been abusing the ad hominem argument far too long to remember what a proper
argument looks like.

Julian has not attacked Mr. Hines in any way, and he deserves to be treated
fairly and with respect. To say that Julian gets his information from a
supermarket checkout is the kind of comment that disqualified the author of
the comment from serious consideration, and in this case reaffirms he is
total idiot, albeit a useful one.

This explains a great deal why the US military are seen as 'trigger happy'.

Yesterday, US military personnel opened fire on a car in Baghdad, killing
both occupants because they were said to have refused an order to stop. Once
the gun fire had halted the car the two occupants were driving burst into
flames.

US troops then made no attempt whatsoever to put the fire out and ascertain
who these two individuals were. Indeed, they just left the burning wreck and
swiftly moved out of the area - It was left to the locals to extinguish the
fire, and by the time they had put it out the occupants were just a mass of
burnt flesh and bone, even the number plates had melted in the heat.

Armed men loyal to Saddam ?

Or were they possibly two innocent people, whose families will never know
what has happened to them after they failed to return home last night ?

No wonder the Iraqis hate the Americans and want you out.

British rules of engagement call for a warning to be issued that force will
be used if you don't comply with the order. However, if you are shot at or
believe your life or the lives of others are in imminent danger, then you
may open fire, but only using the appropriate amount of force.

US rules of engagement seem to be - 'shoot 'em up - ask questions later'.
Or in yesterdays example - 'shoot 'em up - then swiftly move out'.

Hit and run - classic guerrilla tactics.

Jessica Lynch was rescued, well treated and is alive today.

Are we hearing "Liberal Angst" here ---- where all sorts of things are
"tragic"?

The Useful Idiot still doesn't get it.

What she did id COMMENDABLE but she is STILL NOT A HERO deserving a Bronze
Star.

Giving medals willy-nilly belittles those whose deeds earned the same medals
properly.

I saw the Sky TV interview with the doctor at the hospital. Sisse
whatever "full" reports that come out, it probably won't include him.

"My son has asked for a pair of Nike trainers.

** What? The right to shoot at unarmed doctors in a hospital, who had
previously been trying to get messages to US forces about returnuing
the casualty they were looking after?
If shoot first at unarmed civilians is US policy, it is news to me.

Don't worry, Tigs. I got no problem being "ignored" (because, of course,
he's not) by David Hines.

I just think it's a waste. just think of how California could get out of
its energy crisis, if only Hiney would use his powers for good.

Firing warning shots at an approaching vehicle to get it to stop, when shouted
commands will probably not be heard, is an entirely appropriate action by our
väed.

No snap judgements, Hines, EVERYONE knows the US forces are trigger-happy
amateurs where operations like that in Iraq are concerned. It all boils down
to proper training and a good command structure, where every soldier knows
his or her role.

Do you see British forces being targeted by the Iraqis day after day ?

Because they are professional, and unlike the US forces they are trained
properly for such actions as police work in occupied countries which have
recently suffered a war. The Brits also understand that sensitivity is the
key to success, as opposed to pushing your weight about, bullying the locals
and shooting up anything that moves.

The Americans would do well to watch and learn from the Brits.

As for the US system of awarding its soldiers gallantry medals - it's become
nothing more than a joke.

Castles Abbeys and Medieval Buildings

They did. In Boston. And reacted like Iraqis.

OK so they didn't do the learning bit. -(

If we should not jump to conclusions until all the facts are out then
why has this soldier been given all the medals immediately?

"My son has asked for a pair of Nike trainers.
He's ten years old, he should make his own"

"I bought a CD of whale music. Imagine my
disappointment when I got home to discover
that it was actual a cover version by a tribute

Because they had enough evidence to DO that, Nebbish.

The Army and DOD probably DO know the entire story of what happened. That
does NOT mean they are required to tell YOU and me.

All the facts do not have to be OUT, Nebbish. The facts come IN ---- to those
cleared to KNOW them.

There is still hostile activity going on in Iraq ---- a great deal of it.

Some of the story is still undoubtedly classified. The chief Iraqi informant,
a lawyer, is in U.S. protective custody, with his family.

He and his entire family will be brought to America ---- rewarded and
financed ---- educated and trained, as necessary ---- put in the Witness
Protection Program and given green cards ---- and then given a new lease on
life. The man is not qualified to practice law in the United States quite
yet.

Many folks in the USG have FAR more FACTS on this event than you do, Nebbish.

Now, why don't you shut up with the ignorant prattling, babbling and
opining ---- and simply wait for the facts to come out?

In the meantime, stick to whale music and Nike trainers.

. Further, YOU give medals to Brits whom you consider deserving and we'll
take care of the Americans.

Watch the NBC movie about Jessica Lynch ---- and then babble some more ---- as
I trust you will.

American geologist and geomorphologist who pioneered in explaining the forces that molded the present landforms of arid climates. Through his studies inhydrology, Bryan became an authority on the geology of water conservation and dam sites, and on several occasions served as consultant to the Mexican government on the construction of dams and reservoirs for reclamation projects. In 1923-25, Bryan served as geologist on archaeological expeditions in the Chaco Canyon area of New Mexico where he applied geological research as an aid to archaeological and anthropological investigation. His correlations of alluviums, cave deposits bearing artifacts, moraines, and till helped establish the antiquity of man in North America .

Selman Abraham Waksman, was a Ukrainian-born (Priluka) American biochemist who was one of the world's foremost authorities on soil microbiology. After the discovery of penicillin, he played a major role in initiating a calculated, systematic search for antibiotics among microbes. In 1939, Dubos, a previous student pointed out a bacteria-killing agent in a soil microorganism. He introduced the term antibiotic, "against life." In 1943, he isolated streptomycin from a mold he had known and studied early in his life. His consequent discovery of this antibiotic streptomycin, the first specific antibiotic effective against tuberculosis, earned him the 1952 Nobel Prize.

German quantum physicist who, with James Franck, received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1925 for the Franck-Hertz experiment, which confirmed the quantum theory that energy can be absorbed by an atom only in definite amounts and provided an important confirmation of the Bohr atomic model. He was a nephew of Heinrich Hertz. Although he fought on the German side in World War I, being of Jewish descent, he was forced to resign his professorship (1934) when Hitler took power. From 1945 he worked in the Soviet Union, and then in 1955 was a professor of physics in Leipzig , East Germany .

Original name (until 1843) Johann Mendel. Austrian pioneer in the study of heredity. He spent his adult life with the Augustinian monastery in Brunn, where as a geneticist, botanist and plant experimenter, he was the first to lay the mathematical foundation of the science of genetics, in what came to be called Mendelism. Over the period 1856-63, Mendel grew and analyzed over 28,000 pea plants. He carefully studied for each their plant height, pod shape, pod color, flower position, seed color, seed shape and flower color. He made two very important generalizations from his pea experiments, known today as the Laws of Heredity. Mendel coined the present day terms in genetics: recessiveness and dominance.

German astronomer. In 1809, at the age of 26, Bessel was appointed director of Frederick William III of Prussia 's new Königsberg Observatory and professor of astronomy, where he spent the rest of his career. His monumental task was determining the positions and proper motions for about 50,000 stars, which allowed the first accurate determination of interstellar distances. Bessel's work in determining the constants of precession, nutation and aberration won him further honors. Other than the sun, he was the first to measure the distance of a star, by parallax, of 61 Cygni (1838). In mathematical analysis, he is known for his Bessel function.

Born 22 July 1763 died 19 Aug 1838.

Civil engineer, lawyer and politician, born in Pennsylvania but moved to New York state in 1794. The New York State Legislature introduced a bill to fund a feasibility study for a New York State canal, and retained Judge James Geddes (1808) survey routes across the state, east to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario . On 20 Jan 1809, Geddes recommended a Hudson-Erie route to the State legislature. Funding was delayed, but construction on the Erie Canal began on 4 Jul 1817. Taking eight years to complete, it is one of the first great engineering works in North America . Close to 1,000 Erie Canal workers died of malaria in the swamps. Geddes also consulted on canal routes for Ohio .

Born 22 July 1708 died 10 Oct 1789

Dutch naturalist and engraver who skillfully dissected insects and made detailed illustrations of their anatomy. He also had a career as an official codebreaker. In 1738 he entered the service of the States General as an administrator of secret expenses and as a code-clerk. In his leisure he turned to natural history. He believed that nature was a cipher that could be interpreted by tracing every detail of its perfect design. He designed a simple microscope which had each lens suspended at the end of a series of ball and socket joints over a small mahogony dissecting table mounted on a post above a wooden base with small drawers containing his instruments. After preparing engravings for several books written by others, he produced his own treatises.« [Other sources list his birth year as 1706 and others as 1707.]

This Day in History: 07/22/1934 - Jessica Lynch gets hero's welcome - HISTORY

Pvt. Lynch to Tell Story in $1 Million Book Deal

By Mark Egan
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch has signed a $1
million agreement with Alfred A. Knopf, giving the injured former U.S. Army
private the chance to tell her own story, the publisher said on Tuesday.

The publisher said the book, "I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story,"
will be written by former New York Times reporter Rick Bragg.
Sources familiar with the book said it will tell the tale of a small town
girl who goes to war and becomes a national hero, recognition she does not
feel she deserves.
Sources at Knopf said the publisher will pay $1 million to Bragg and the
Lynch family. Bragg will be paid a flat fee for producing the book while the
Lynch family will receive part of the advance and all of the royalties.
"I have been heartened by the hope and faith of the American people and by
the tireless effort of the U.S. Armed Forces," Lynch said in a statement
issued by the publisher.
Lynch said many Americans had written offering their support to her. "I feel
I owe them all this story, which will be about more than a girl going off to
war and fighting alongside her fellow soldiers.
Lynch was granted an honorable military discharge last week due to her
injuries. An army private, she became a symbol of American patriotism during
the war, which generated controversy as accounts of her rescue in Iraq
(news - web sites) varied.
A source familiar with the book said it will tell, "what she saw and what
she remembers" of the Iraq ordeal. The source said the book would tell the
story of, "a kid from the back woods who goes to war and becomes this
national hero who doesn't really feel as though she is a hero."
The 20-year-old supply clerk was captured by Iraqi forces on March 23 near
the city of Nassiriya. Eleven other U.S. soldiers were killed and nine
wounded in the incident.
U.S. commandos rescued Lynch from an Iraqi hospital on April 1. An early
media report quoted unnamed U.S. officials saying she fought fiercely before
being captured. But the Army later concluded she was injured when her Humvee
crashed into another vehicle in the convoy after being hit by a
rocket-propelled grenade. Their report said a tired company commander
misread his map and took a wrong turn.
Lynch was given a hero's welcome when she returned to her hometown of
Palestine, West Virginia, on July 22. But the full details of her story have
yet to be told since Lynch said she suffered a loss of memory after her
capture.
She was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War
medal.

Because she's young, and beautiful (according to someone), and all American.

<eyeroll> You tell me, a Bronze Star for a vehicle accident. I don't get it
either. My husband's Unit was right behind hers (they flew past my husband)
and he saw the vehicles. Her injuries were from that accident.

I know I'll never read her book or watch the movie.

Thank you! It seems like it's an insult to those who were wounded by gun or
bomb, but I won't try to speak for those people.

What will the book be called: "Jessica Lynch: I Fell Off A Humvee".

I don't blame her for selling the story. But IMO, bottom line is that she's
a trumped up hero for a trumped up war. I do believe that there are real
heroes over there and it's a shame their story isn't being told.

She was also left to ROT by the Iraqi's that provided ZERO medical assistance.

Doesn't matter how she was injured she was in the middle of a war. Would she be
any less if she'd crashed in a chopper ?

She wasn't a Rambo by any stretch, but how many of your high school girlfriends
are in the same position ?

Another clueless one. Yawn. Notice the original "get a life". Yawn II.

And as for your idiotic statement "She didn't make a big thing out of her
POW status you can thank the media for that." DUH! She accepted the money.
That's her part in the tango. Get it?

And you'd turn down a million dollars thrown at you ? They aren't asking her
for a fantasy. If the best she can come up with is broken bones and memory loss
that's her story.

I can't say I've read a thing about her running from publisher to publisher
begging for a million dollar deal.

I fail to see what accepting money from anyone has anything to with anything.
She didn't murder anyone..

It's obvious to me that you a) need to argue b) need to defend her c) need
to be "right" and d) morph the discussion to fit your needs.

Knock yourself out. I won't waste any more time on you.

Respond by voting out of office the fools who continue to try to sell an
illegal war.

You just aren't following this thread very well. Those I've read feel she
should have just been totally ignored or better yet left to die where they
found her in Iraq.

As for who gets recognition, that's a military thing. it's all pretty much CYA
to appease the masses.

If everyone that deserved a medal got one the metals industry stock would
skyrocket above the price of gold.

Many do get the medals, but very few ever get the press attention she's
getting. She has little to no control over the press, so getting angry at her
is stupid.

Perhaps people are angry over the situation, which is blatantly
manipulative, and in your drama queen mode, you missed that.

But if she'd turn her back on the press and ignore them they'd
eventually go away.
If she continues to feed the frenzy then she's contributing to the
problem. I think that's where much of the frustration is coming from.
Too many people have loved ones still on station around the globe. These
folks spend their days worrying about their soldiers. I imagine many of
them see the near-deification of Jessica Lynch as a slap in the face to
those still serving.

Oh please and they've claimed I'm a drama queen.. Deification.. They want to
pay her money for her story. Her town was glad she came home ALIVE. They showed
her on TV. I saw all the POWS on TV. I couldn't pick JL out of a lineup with
all the times I've seen her on TV.

I could pick out the black girl that was on TV via a POW tape submitted by the
Iraqi's.. I doubt I'll ever forget the terror in her eyes.

IIRC She was walking on crutches beside the litter JL was being carried out on.

Jessica Lynch Gets Hero’s Welcome: 2003

On this day in 2003, U.S. Army Private Jessica Lynch, a prisoner-of-war who was rescued from an Iraqi hospital, receives a hero’s welcome when she returns to her hometown of Palestine, West Virginia. The story of the 19-year-old supply clerk, who was captured by Iraqi forces in March 2003, gripped America however, it was later revealed that some details of Lynch’s dramatic capture and rescue might have been exaggerated.

Lynch, who was born April 26, 1983, was part of the 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas. On March 23, 2003, just days after the U.S. invaded Iraq, Lynch was riding in a supply convoy when her unit took a wrong turn and was ambushed by Iraqi forces near Nasiriya. Eleven American soldiers died and four others besides Lynch were captured.

Lynch, who sustained multiple broken bones and other injuries when her vehicle crashed during the ambush, was taken to an Iraqi hospital. On April 1, she was rescued by U.S. Special Forces who raided the hospital where she was being held. They also recovered the bodies of eight of Lynch’s fellow soldiers. Lynch was taken to a military hospital in Germany for treatment and then returned to the United States.

Lynch’s story garnered massive media attention and she became an overnight celebrity. Various reports emerged about Lynch’s experience, with some news accounts indicating that even after Lynch was wounded during the ambush she fought back against her captors. However, Lynch later stated that she had been knocked unconscious after her vehicle crashed and couldn’t remember the details of what had happened to her. She also said she had not been mistreated by the staff at the Iraqi hospital and they put up no resistance to her rescue. Critics–and Lynch herself–charged the U.S. government with embellishing her story to boost patriotism and help promote the Iraq war.

In August 2003, Lynch received a medical honorable discharge. She collaborated on a book about her experience, I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, which was released later that year. In April 2007, Lynch testified before Congress that she had falsely been portrayed as a “little girl Rambo” and the U.S. military had hyped her story for propaganda reasons. According to Lynch: “I am still confused as to why they chose to lie and tried to make me a legend when the real heroics of my fellow soldiers that day were, in fact, legendary.” She added: “The truth of war is not always easy to hear but is always more heroic than the hype.”
